Plain Jane is an American reality television makeover summer series that transforms one woman each week. The show premiered on The CW on Wednesday July 28, 2010 at 9 pm. The second season premiered on MTV networks around the world on late October and ended on early December. According to Louise Roe the casting process for the third season has begun.[1]

Show format

Each week British fashion expert Louise Roe, acting like a "fairy godmother,"[2] takes one Jane and transforms her from inside and out with confidence building challenges and a head to toe makeover. It all culminates when she reveals her secret crush to the man of her dreams on a romantic date.

Production

The series is produced by Allison Grodner ("Big Brother"), Rich Meehan ("Big Brother") and Amy Palmer ("You're Cut Off") for Fly On the Wall Entertainment and Sony Pictures Television.

Promotion

On May 21, 2010, an eleven-second promo was released on The CW's official Youtube page.[3] On May 28, 2010, a 3-4 minute sneak peek was released on The CW's Youtube featuring the events of the first episode.[4]

International Versions

MTV International has acquired the format rights to Plain Jane and has greenlit an 8-episode English-language version of the reality series with the same title and the same host as the original CW series, Louise Roe, for a 2011 fall premiere. MTV International also airs the show in European and Asian countries. Sony channels in Latin America has acquired the rights to air the US version. The format has also been sold in French Canada to an upcoming specialty channel temporarily named TVA Mode, which has commissioned 16 episodes under the title Le Tresor en Moi to launch in May 2011.[5]

Ratings

The show premiered with 0.98 million viewers and a 0.4 rating in A18-49 demographic.[6] The show attracted fewer viewers than the America's Next Top Model repeat which preceded it. In CW's Women 18-34 target demo it scored a 0.5 rating.

The CW announced that encores of the show will be broadcast every Tuesday at 8pm. The encore of the first episode outperformed the premiere scoring a 0.5 rating in A18-49 and 1.26 total viewers.[7]

The second episode was stable in A18-49 demographic with a 0.4 rating and increase its viewers to 1.11 million viewers which was better than its premiere episode. Repeats of previous episodes on Tuesday continued to outperform first broadcasts.[8]

The encore of the second episode aired on Tuesday August 10 and improved again scoring a series high for the show with 1.29 million viewers and a 0.5 rating in A18-49.[9]

The third episode aired on August 11 and scored a series high for an original episode with 1.23 million viewers and a 0.5 rating in A18-49.[10] It also scored a series high in CW's target demo Women 18-34 with a 0.8 rating.

The fourth episode aired on August 18 and scored a new high in both total viewers with 1.33 million & in A18-49 with a 0.5 rating.[11]

The season finale aired on September 1 and fell to series low with only 0.97 million viewers & a 0.4 rating in A18-49. In W18-34 it scored a 0.7 rating.

Reruns

The CW announced on July 2011, that it will air repeats of the show, during summer 2011, every thursday at 9/8c, starting on July 21.[12]
